The robe of useless items came from an April fools day addition of Dragon Magazine a LOOOONG time ago. Some other goodies were: a string of electrical Christmas tree lights, a barrel of fresh orchish beer, a one inch piece of rope, a pint of soverign glue (undiluted with oil of slipperiness) in a tightly stoppered indestructible bottle, a bag of 1000 lead pieces, etc. The 40 foot ladder had three rungs btw :)
