Also, the Silmarillion is essential. During the last chapter of the war of the ring, it does talk about Gandalf and Sauruman, using their elvish names I believe, and gives a few details you might not have been aware of-including the bearers of the three rings.

The whole thing is worth reading too of course-it describes the whole history and mythology of middle earth. It was never finished during his life time though-and the narrative flow isn't as smooth, and the various parts aren't connected as well.
