This reminds me of a book I read many, many years ago called "The Green Futures of Tycco". A similar exchange takes place between the main characters adolescent self and adult self. I wish I could find a copy of it. It's been out of print for a number of years and the used book stores I've been to never have any copies.
That book, and another one by Daniel Pinkwater titled "Alan Mendohlson: The Boy From Mars" were my absolute favorite books when I was 12. I think I read each one three or four times that year.
