Fasten, then zip. No question about it. The reason is pretty simple: fastening the top of the pants pulls together the upper end of the zippered section, and it's always easier to zip two pieces of fabric when they're already fairly close together. Try zipping up two pieces of fabric that are hanging wide apart at one end. It's harder, and you're more likely to break or jam the zipper. Of course, if your pants are somewhat baggy, so that your waistline isn't pushing apart the upper end of the zipper, then I guess it doesn't really matter. But I always wear skin-tight leather pants to every occasion, so for me, it's important. ;-)
