Others are in the hospital, or dead. They seem to have the stuff that heros are made of. Not just a few of them, and it's not just in New York, either. Fire fighters everywhere are a special breed. I just hope somebody will remember that the next time they negotiate a contract. Maybe they can include more than a 2% raise.

Nononono! We don't want to soften firefighters by giving them what they deserve! That would let all kinds of non-heroic people into the force. It's the same with the police.

Seriously, it really seems as if people on the public coffers around the world think like that. Do you know anywhere where a firefighter, a police officer or a nurse are payed in reflection of their responsibility?
