As I mentioned before, the completion of "Trivia Stampede" preempted progress on "Game of the Ages" for a time. As of Saturday, I'm back with it again. It's quite apparent why I can't seem to stick with it for long periods of time -- it's arduous work! I suspect Issachar was probably smart to write out all the text before doing the coding, as doing both at the same time is pretty taxing and requires switching back and forth between the left and right sides of the brain. (With FQ, I had already written not just the texts but the game itself and just had to convert the code to AGL.) At any rate, I'm doing well. Over the weekend, I knocked two more locations out.
I decided to do some stat comparison between how this game is shaping up and Fantasy Quest.
FQ has 144 locations. The code for the locations averages out to about 1327 bytes each, which is a rough indicator of the complexity of each location.
As of this morning, GotA has 41 completed locations. But the code length averages to about 3228 bytes for each location.
So in about 16 or 17 more locations, I'll have coded as much as there is in all of FQ in roughly a third of the locations.
No wonder this game seems to be crawling. Originally, I thought this would be a smaller game. It will be, in terms of places you can go, but almost all the locations have something "significant" in them, so I guess the gameplay itself will take longer. On the other hand, I don't know that there will be as many places people will get "stuck," either. *shrug* We'll see.
