At noon today, everyone at my company went outside to the grassy picnic area next to our parking lot to observe the national day of prayer and remembrance called for by President Bush. Our CEO, who was in New York along with several other employees the day of the attacks, addressed the gathering and once again reaffirmed, as so many others have done, that American unity and patriotism will prevail over fear and cowardice.
One of our IT specialists who is also an ordained minister read a passage from Psalm 27 and led in prayer. We observed two separate moments of silence, and in between employees were encouraged to say a few words if they so desired.
One person commented that when God allows things like this to happen, it is always for a reason. We who have so small a perspective may not understand why, but if we truly trust in God, we can rest assured that this did not take Him by surprise. Something good will come of this.
This has been a major wake-up call for the people of the United States of America. We had grown complacent; we took our way of life for granted. We have been reminded what the cost of freedom can be. Even if it proves impossible to stamp out the terrorists responsible for these heinous actions, I hope that our nation won't soon forget the lesson we learned this week.
