The "laws" that these people may have broken could be things like "accidentally baring an ankle in public," for which the consequence could be as much as death. I missed the news story (and everything else that happened in the world over the last fortnight), and I choose not to comment on that, but under Taliban law, all the following are illegal in Afganistan:
Riding a bicycle Wearing glasses Men not wearing a mustache Women being able to read Married couples kissing in public Failing to attend a mosque 5 times a day
Any of these crimes could potentially be punished by death.
We really need to get the Taliban out of power.
