i can't remember the episode, but someone asked about latinum and Quark explained that "latinum" is the universe's most precious isotope, and it's suspended (pressed) in liquid form inside an ultra-thin casing of gold leaf. so you could tear it up. somehow it's supposed to withstand being in your pocket, however! i haven't figured that one out yet.
