A gallon is 8 pints. That's the same in Britain and the US. Where the weirdness creeps in is that in the US a pint is 16 fluid oz, and in Britain it's 20 fluid oz. Buying a pint in America is something I found deeply unsatisfying.

I don't know why Americans felt the need to reduce the size of a pint (and therefore a gallon), but no doubt they had a good reason.
