Well, just because the system worked, doesn't mean it's right. The reason most people chose 3, is more likely because of it being a "holy" and/or "magic" number. You have the holy trinity, you have the jokes that always have to have three repetitions in them (because two aren't enough to establish a tendency, and four is too many to keep it short and to the point)... Personally, I'd probably pick 4, because it's been "my" number for as long as I can remember, but if not, I'd probably pick 2, as I have a knack for the even numbers. And if you take the golden section into account once more, 2 and 3 are both equally close to it, while 1 and 4 are not.

I don't think you can apply the same system to every one of those situations. I think the psychological conditions change a lot going from four to ten alternatives, and also from ten to a hundred.
