Well, supposedly, when you sell your soul you have no chance of getting it back or being saved. Selling souls, however, is just a silly myth that I would advise you not to put stock in.

As for Dante, that was what he came up with for a fictional story. I once wrote a story that revolved around St. Peter being promoted and so St. Bob was the new guy at the Pearly Gates. Just because I wrote that doesn't mean it should become part of the faith, and you're right, Dante's layered Hell doesn't make sense, as all sins are the same in God's eyes.
