The show makes me sad. Having watched Quiz Show a few weeks ago, I am amazed at how insipid the current knowledge based game shows are these days. A few generations back, the questions asked required knowledge beyond simple pop culture: "What was the name of the last King of Prussia?" "In _The Odyssey_, what was the name of Medea's island?" "Which Shakespearean sonnet began with the line 'Let me not to marriage of true minds admit impediments.'?"

Nowadays, quiz show questions are akin to: "What is the name of Bart Simpson's youngest sister?", "What character does Courtney Cox play on 'Friends'?", or "What color do you get if you mix blue and yellow?"

A while back, I was thinking how neat it would be if there was a game show where the host was rather uncivil. The host would be someone that the people would be playing against, rather than a jovial master of ceremonies -- a downright villain. It would give everyone someone to root against. Instead of just trying to guess the answers that the host asks the contestants, the viewing audience would be actively supporting the contestant, hoping that they would win. No, they would hope that the nasty host would lose.

The host would have to be rather intelligent (or at least be able to look intelligent whilst reading from a stack of index cards). You'd have contestants who were intelligent (as opposed to those well versed in popular culture) show up each week. It would be great.

Then a week later, Chirco mentioned "The Weakest Link" over in RinkChat.

Bah.
