Well..."Where The Red Grows" is not a good movie, in my opinion. I thought it was boring. "Beaches" is incredibly sappy and the song "Wind Beneath My Wings" makes me writhe in agony, it is soooooo syrupy. So, "Beaches" make me run away, not cry. However, those two movies are famous tearjerkers, well-loved by many people. I don't know why.

I wonder, is that particular kind of movie an "acceptable" outlet for men to allow themselves to experience heart-rending emotion?

I'm afraid I can't help with that question. Men and crying are a mystery to me.

I was raised in a family where no one ever said "Boys don't cry!" or "That's not ladylike!" or "You're such a tomboy!" (or any other gender role cliches). So, my brother could cry without being chastised. However, he doesn't cry over movies or hardly anything else. I don't know. Whenever I ask my male friends why they don't cry, they just shrug.
