Gone with the Wind... Braveheart... Where the Red Fern Grows, Beaches... Okay. :-) May I ask what it is in these films which causes a good kind of sadness?

I also inquired whether my friend Stephen ever got emotional over any movie, and surprisingly enough, he mentioned that Braveheart caused the shedding of a few tears at the end. I wonder, is that particular kind of movie an "acceptable" outlet for men to allow themselves to experience heart-rending emotion?
