Some Brits (myself included) go in very hevily for "insult humour". The trick is to get the subject torn between being offended and laughing out loud. Of course, if the target isn't into insult humour, then it can very easily backfire. Thus, it is only used on people you know well enough to be sure that that they'll apreciate it. It's actually a sign of friendship.

A weird sign of friendship, though.

I must admit that I'm one of the worst offenders when it comes to anti-US jokes, and they aren't all merely jokes. Overall I quite like America, I just wish it would stop thinking
