Tragedy vs. Comedy in entertainment is one thing that distinguished Classical Greek culture from Hellenistic Greece (at least according to my Western Civ prof).

In its golden Age, when everything was rosy, the public generally preferred tragedy, perhaps as a means of reminding them that life is fleeting. As time wore on and the Greeks lost their cultural dominance, comedy soared in popularity, potentially as an escape from the depression of everyday life.

But i wonder where dark comedy fits in? Hmm...
