When they bought into the breathtakingly tragic mythos that no matter how hard they try, no modern Greek will ever, EVER live up to the glorious achievements of his Ancient Greek brethren. Thus the Greek battle for world recognition is lost even before it begins.

This would appear to be the Mediterranean version of "cultural cringe."
