Bowie's performance is what shot the movie for me, not as Goblin King, but as a musician: he doesn't sing more than a handful of notes that aren't out of tune.

Would you believe that I prefer Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang over Labyrinth over Mary Poppins?!

The problem with all of these movies, for me, is the singing musicals. Argh. Where you say Dave Bowie's performance actually "made the movie" for ya, I'd say that's the exact same thing that tanked Labyrinth for me. Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang is amusing only because the whole film is a very silly cute scenario requiring suitably silly antics. But I'm sorry, in general I just can't get my head wrapped around serious musicals, because it always breaks my suspension of disbelief.

I mean, c'mon, how many people would really attempt solving a gut-wrenching crisis by breaking out into a heartfelt digressive solo?
