In a word: Yes. When I was in university, I was into my third year before I made any real friends through the U, and now that I am done university, I am seeing that about the only thing I had in common with most of those people was the fact that we were working towards the same degree. The only one of my university friends that I would still claim to be close to is the one who now works in the office next to mine, and the only one who I have grown closer to since university is the one who never used to have much in common with me but now works in the office around the corner and down the hall.

As for meeting new people, I am not much good at that either, for many of the same reasons that you list. I think, though, that for me, the answer is to try to meet people through avenues that will tend to introduce you to the sorts of people that you WILL have things in common with. For me, when I was in college, that meant getting involved in a Bible study with the local Campus Crusade for Christ chapter. Although my busy schedule kept me from forming any lasting relationships there, I always felt welcome and in touch with the people I met there. Now that I am done university, I plan to get involved in a young adults group through my church (as soon as my work schedule slows down enough for me to be able to attend meetings consistently *grumble*). I can't say for sure what sorts of things would work for you, especially since I do not know what opportunities you have available to you, but I thought I would try to give you some ideas, anyway.
