Although I'm not really a movie buff, something similar to that often happens in the 'Net realm of my favorite medium - adventure games. Take... oh... LucasArts' Escape from Monkey Island. (Great game, by the way.) Over the months from the game's announcement at E3 last year to its release date in November, LucasArts gave away screenshots a dime a dozen to every gaming site out there. Much the same thing happened with interviews. Eventually, I stopped looking at the screenshots and such altogether, to avoid spoiling the game any more. The game was still a blast, but I can't help but wonder how much MORE fun it would have been if all the fans had been merely tantalized by tidbits, instead of overloaded with them.

Of course, for adventure games, some prior information is valuable, so that you don't end up spending 30-50 bucks on a game that is suck. *cough*Lightbringer*cough* But I don't want to be glutted with information about every little plot twist... and, in most cases, since adventure games are much more low-profile than movies, the only source of information is coming right from the company itself. That was a big oops that LucasArts made with EMI, and something that Presto Studios (with Myst 3: Exile) is doing right... only releasing little bits of information, a screenshot or two here, an interview there, and NO plot spoilers at all. That's more what I like to see.
