The trouble with Saruman is that diabolical evil is darned easy to portray, and seems appropriate at first, but isn't what the character calls for. Saruman has to exemplify corruption and decay rather than simple evil, and the most important distinction that has to be made about him is the fall from the high state of grace that he once held. I'm trying to come up with an actor to might be able to portray that, and the only person who really comes to mind is Sir Anthony Hopkins. Anyone else?


Anthony Hopkins would be an excellent choice, but I think he would be better as Theoden. 'Course he could probably play Gollum and do a fantastic job! : )

One other name I've heard is Oliver Platt as a Hobbit (probably Bilbo). I haven't seen many of his movies, but what I have seen I've liked. And he certainly looks like a Hobbit!

As for Saruman, there are a couple of "villainous" actors that I think could pull it off - - Gary Oldman and Alan Rickman.
