Ellis Peters has written about twenty mysteries starring Brother Cadfael (thirteen of which were made into television movies and occasionally appear on PBS' Mystery). Set in England during that whole 12th Century Empress Maud/King Stephen thing, the main character is a sleuthing Benedictine monk of all things. _A Morbid Taste for Bones_ is the first book in this series.
Similarly, Sharon Kay Penman has two medieval mysteries out now (along with five really good historical fictions). _The Queen's Man_ and _Creul as the Grave_ are two of a trilogy of sorts. They follow a [word that means illegitimate offspring that the Naughty Word Filter doesn't like even though I'm using it correctly] named Justin who becomes a secret missionary for Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. The time is set during the "Robin Hood" era -- King Richard is away at the Crusades and is presumed lost. Prince John schemes for the throne of England. Justin is swept up in court politics while trying to solve a murder.
Candice Robb has a mystery series featuring a welsh archer in England during the 1100s, but I'm not really enjoying her writing style. _The Apothecary Rose_ is the first Owen Archer book.
