The usage of punctuation in quotation marks doesn't seem logical to me. For instance, if someone is singing the song "American Pie" and I wish to state that, I've got to say: She was singing "American Pie." That looks incorrect to me as there is no period in the song title. I think it makes more sense to have the sentence read: She was singing "American Pie".
