The rumor among the Facilities Management people (the ones who keep up the campus grounds) is that someone dumped a couple of chickens on campus 20 years ago. Sometimes people take them home as temporary pets, but the chickens continue to reproduce. A few months ago I saw a mother chicken with eight little baby chicks. It was the cutest thing ever, although I imagine baby squirrels might be cuter.

I'm sure I mentioned this before, but if you are ever on Kauai (Hawaii) you will notice that the island is overrun with chickens. Most are Banty chickens. They run up and down the streets in town, hang out at the beach, frequent the golf courses, roost on porches and even enter buildings if someone leaves the door open. In open air restaurants, which are common on Kauai, the waiters have to shoo chickens off the table. I think the chicken population there is exploding. The first time I went there was at least ten years ago and I don't remember noticing them. The second time, I saw a few in a park and along a highway. But the last time, a few months ago the chickens were wall to wall. Something is going to have to be done. I suppose they could put free range chicken on the menus. Banty eggs are quite small. A single omlet would use up a dozen. Or, instead of having a Thanksgiving turkey shoot, they could have a chicken shoot.
