One thing I thought TNG and all the other entries in the Star Trek franchise did *right* was steer clear of the cheese and the laughs for the most part. Sure, it was chock full of cliches and techno-babble, but for the most part all the ST franchise entries are also chock full of decent-to-excellent actors who can play a serious roll perfectly without resorting to too much cheese and camp. Sure, a bunch of episodes and scenes within the episodes are played for laughs, but playing something for laughs and being cheesy are entirely different things. >
One of the episodes in the first season was a remake of an original series episode. And in the piolet they had shorts and t-shirt uniforms. And the sets in the first season or two (especially alien terrains) looked almost as campy as the first series. And I don't think they played alot of stuff on Andromeda for the cheese or laugh factor, only a couple of lines were funny, and Data always could provide a laugh in Star Trek.
Speed'insects/humanoids are difficult to pull off convincingly anyway, I don't hold that aginst them'ball
