Because our Constitution is the basis for our entire system of government. The founding fathers who designed it meant for it to endure; they wanted their new country to last. If they made one mistake, it was putting too much responsibility and power into the hands of a group of nine people (the U.S. Supreme Court). In my opinion, the viability of the Constitution has not changed, but it is the Supreme Court that gets to decide what is and isn't "constitutional," and unfortunately, that group of nine people has become more and more liberal in those judgements.
