(modern medicine?) The "life should be preserved at all costs" vs. "keeping people alive, but in horrible pain or as a vegetable is bad" makes sense, but you seem to be disapproving of medicine in its entirety here. If not, please explain..
Here's how I look at it: God created us with intelligent minds and the ability to learn, research, develop new skills, etc. He created the world, told us some things about it, and said, "you figure out the rest." Medical science is part of that, and I think that God is pleased with all that we have figured out. I have no problem with modern medicine; lifesaving techniques, etc.
I think that if someone is dead (read: brain-dead) but their body is being kept alive by machines, there is nothing wrong with disconnecting those machiens and "letting them die."

The New Testament, for Christians, overrides the old much of the time; you didn't explicitly say you were Christian, though.. But in any case, you just said above that only God has the right to determine who lives and who dies! Do you think the US Justice System is divinely inspired?
I second what Nyperold said. God never changes; He is immutable.
The Bible also says that government is ordained by God for specific purposes. And one of the functions of any government is to punish wrongdoers; to protect its upstanding citizens from the criminal element. So actually, yes, I guess one could say that the US Justice System is inspired by God.
