You'll see something like: "Keystroke Alt-0191" holding down the alt key and typing in 0191 on the numberpad will make that keystroke without you having to cut and paste. If you use a certain character a lot, such as an en or em dash, which is used a LOT in typesetting, it's handy to know the alt codes so you don't have to keep calling up the stupid char map every 4 seconds.

I almost always have Microsoft Word open, so I go into that, click Insert, Symbol, and then double-click on whatever symbol I want. I then close the Insert box, copy the symbol out of Word, and paste it into the forum. For symbols I use a lot, like Ä, ä, Ö, ö, Ü, ü, and ß for German homework, I've assigned special shortcut keys in Word.

I always thought it was a shame that people don't use diacritics and other alphabetical oddities, like the umlaut in naïve or the œ in amœba, even though technically they're supposed to. Sigh.
