is to click once on the character you want in the character map. Look in the lower right hand corner of the char. map. You'll see something like: "Keystroke Alt-0191" holding down the alt key and typing in 0191 on the numberpad will make that keystroke without you having to cut and paste. If you use a certain character a lot, such as an en or em dash, which is used a LOT in typesetting, it's handy to know the alt codes so you don't have to keep calling up the stupid char map every 4 seconds.
