I was just talking to someone in chat about this sorta stuff, then i found this post... I thought maybe Dave or someone could explain to me how this works... This being why you have to be moving relative to the earth, and it can't be moving relative to you...
(this is upside down, so you'll have to scroll from the bottom up. I lost the first part cause it scrolled away, but i think i remembered it pretty well)
Chrico has left. Chrico: I'm leaving before the retribution. Bye!!! Chrico: JOY - I give up. Think what you will. I just know that I'm right and you're wrong. As long as you don't really care, We'll both be happy. Anyway, Einstein was a twerp. Chrico: Einstein's theories Jimmy_Of_York: well why can't you say that you're on the ship, and you're staying still, and everything else is just moving around you? Chrico: nonsense Chrico: space Chrico: light Chrico: time Chrico: gravity Jimmy_Of_York: but my point really is, what do you base movement on? Jimmy_Of_York: relative to everything other than the ship, yeah Chrico: and the earth is not moving a lot, yes? Jimmy_Of_York: yeah Chrico: the ship is moving at the speed of light, yes? Jimmy_Of_York: but relative to the ship it is. Chrico: relative to the rest of the universe, it isn't moving Rivikah: ahh! something happened and then there was outlook express Jimmy_Of_York: but relative to the ship, it's moving at the speed of light Chrico: The earth is NOT, i repeat NOT moving at the speed of light. It is moving at about 40,000 miles per second in orbit around the sun. If you create a engine of some sort that could blast the Earth at near light speed, everybody on Earth would die due to lack of heat, lack of photosynthesis and lack of McDonalds. In other words, the Earth would be a giant comet. Liface: I'm stupid Liface: I know Jimmy_Of_York: well, my real question is, which would be effected by that, the ship or the earth, since both are moving at light speed relative to eachother Chrico: So now you know. Chrico: Things moving excerience time slower, so, getting back to your first question, while you experience 100 years at light speed (whether you are on Earth or on the space ship thingymajig) it would be near to a billion years elsewhere. Jimmy_Of_York: that's a stupid thing to say.... Liface: No one knows, stop wondering, Jimmy_Of_York: it would be earth moving at the speed of light away from you.... so wouldn't it be a hundred years for them and LOADS of years for you? but then again, the space ship is moving away at the speed of light relative to earth, so it would be the same for them, LOADS of years on earth, 100 years on the ship... Jimmy_Of_York: if you think of everything being relative to the space ship thingy... Liface: Or else how woould the other peopole be affected Chrico: Don't ask me why, I'm not an expert in quantum mechanics Liface: No Jimmy_Of_York: couldn't everything else just be moving around you and you're just staying still?
------below this scrolled away before i decided to ask about it, so i had to try and remember------ Chrico: no, the earth isn't moving. Jimmy_Of_York: well how do you know you're moving away from the earth at the speed of light, couldn't the earth be moving away from you at the speed of light? Chrico: yes Liface: YOU DIE Jimmy_Of_York: if you leave earth at the speed of light, and say the trip to where you're going takes you 100 years, won't it take longer on earth? Chrico: yeah... Jimmy_Of_York: i have a question....
