The only inter-city trip I took in the UK was from London(Paddington Station, I think.) to Cardif, Wales. I found out that the "125" on the side of the train meant "miles-per-hour!" That train was so fast, it built up a pressure wave that hurt your ears when you went into a tunnel!

London is blessed with a great transportation system.

It depends on what city to what city.
I can drive to Atlanta or Nashville in three hours. Myrtle Beach takes about seven. New Orleans takes all day and Lincoln, Nebraska or Key West, Florida take almost two days. I think I could make it to Los Angeles in four or Boston in two, but I usually fly and rent a car on those longer trips. West of the Mississippi River the traffic is not so bad and you can really cover the miles in a day's time.
