We have one television. Well, actually, there are two in the house right now, but one was borrowed from my parents for my wife to watch while she was sick, and we'll be giving it back soon. We own one television, and it's pretty much the only one in the house that we use.

At the time we were planning our wedding, neither of us owned a television, and we made a decision that we were not going to buy one; at least not right away. We decided that we wanted to go at least one year after our wedding without the "one-eyed beast." Then my mom went out and bought us the TV we have now at a auction.

But this did not ruin our plans. We accepted the television, but did not turn it on. It made a great surface for my stereo, but the screen collected dust for a year, just as we planned. We still saw the occasional program at someone else's house, and we still rented movies and watched them on a borrowed TV/VCR combo, but we survived for a whole year without any regular programming. (Hmmm...I wonder if they call it 'programming' for more than one reason? Are the TV networks programming the people who watch?)

I had a point when I started this post, but now it has fogged in my head into a haze of various thoughts, all of which would take much too long to share here. Suffice it to say that I agree with Sam that TV is not inherently evil. Unfortunately, most of what is broadcast on it is. I think even what I would consider "good" shows carry very subtle messages that attempt to erode the values that I cherish. I would say more about this, but I really don't feel like posting a book on the Message Forum.
