All the opossums I've ever seen were either lying dead in the road, lying dead on the side of the road, or slowly meandering into the road seconds before becoming dead. The only place I've ever seen them hanging by their tails would be in cartoons. It could be one of those legendary mistakes that have been so popularly believed, that it has become incorporated into our culture.
Similar to:
"bananas grow on trees", which they don't; technically they're stalks.
"Washington chopped down a cherry tree" -didn't happen.
"A lion is the king of the jungle" --Jungle?? Since when do they live in the jungle? Seems like they spend a tad more time in the tundra to me. Maybe they just rule from afar.

Tra "maybe Washington chopped down a banana stalk..." nio
