Ack. Don't get me started on what newsreaders do to the language. Maybe they get paid by the syllable.
Having said that, one of the greatest events in the history of New Zealand television news was when the elegant Judy Bailey mispronounced "downtown city shoppers" as "downtown [word that sounds like city] sloppers".
