It would also be nice to be able to "teleport" along a continuous line of empty squares. The end result would be identical to what it would be if you actually walked through all of those squares. The only reason I mention this is because every move means downloading a new 14K HTML page, which gets very aggravating when the connection gets slow!

Along the same idea (that of cutting down the actual number of pages downloaded): when you run from a monster and don't make it, you are presented with a useless screen with only a single option, to fight. I see no reason to have this screen; can't it be combined with the screen that follows it, telling the results of the fight and offering the option of four compass directions?
