Same reason I have to fix so many computers that are "broken," when the remedy usually entails turning that funny little contrast knob. And then there are idiots like my roommate, who just figure that they'll shut the computer down, while Windows and Works and all kinds of stuff are still running. After I tell them about the problems that can cause, I typically get responses like "Oh well. Who cares about a few hard drive errors, anyway?" If you say so.

I don't know, but they also seem to be the bulk of the people who talk in "internetese" - that is to say, using fun expressions like "k00l," and spelling everything wrong (abbreviating "you" into "u" and "too" into "2" and that sort of thing) inside of their myriad and labyrinthine grammatical misstructures (well, it's a word now). I think it has something to do with AOL making the internet so accessible to the people who just barely know how to run a computer - which isn't to say that all AOLers are ignorant buffoons, just that the majority of ignorant buffoons seem to use AOL.
