It's interesting that you bring that up, because metric time is definitely the way to go. Here's how this great system works, you take the current "real" time (using the 0-23 hour scale) and do the following:

(hours * 3600) + (minutes * 60) + (seconds)

Then divide the result by 86,400. The answer will be a good approximation of what percentage of the day has passed. Very useful indeed. Not only that, it's easy to convert mentally; one metric hour (1 percent of the day) is about fifteen minutes. I expect everyone to start using this within the next 5 years.
