Yeah! That must be it. Your concerned neighbour removed it, spider and all, so you would have no cause for alarm.
Or if you favour violent revenge on mat thieves, maybe somebody did steal it and ... only when they were driving away with it ... SUDDENLY REALISED there was a spider on it, glaring at them evilly with its little tiny multiple spider eyes ... and just about to ... POUNCE! That'll teach them. Steal an innocent person's welcome mat, and get the evil spider of destiny which was intended for them.
