Top Six Movies that make you cry or want to cry... posted by Nate on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, at 03:38:06:
Excellent idea for a list. Once again, the Film-Lover's Checklist was an invaluable tool for me while compiling my Top Six.
6. Short Cuts
Hey, this was on my last list! And for the same character. The scene that got to me was Lyle Lovett's sudden reversal of attitude near the end of the movie when Andie McDowell tells him why the cake was never picked up.
5. Schindler's List
Near the end of the movie, when the Allies are coming and Schindler must flee for his own life, and he breaks down saying "I could have saved more" over and over again.
4. Lady in the Water
I really connected with Paul Giamatti's character in this movie, and the scene where he breaks down while remembering his family hit me, because I know I would probably struggle in much the same way were I to lose my wife and children.
3. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Spock's death scene. Yowza, it hurts to watch it every time!
2. The Fountain
The scene where Hugh Jackman, in his grief after the death of his wife, begins tatooing his ring finger where his lost wedding ring should be.
1. The Time Traveler's Wife
Okay, this is out and out cheating. Sort of. This movie just started filming, so I'm probably taking a big risk including it on my list, because the movie may not be anywhere near as powerful as the novel, which I just finished reading.
But this is seriously one of the best stories I've read in recent years, and it yanked out of me a full range of emotions. If they do it right, this will be an excellent movie.
Anyway, the scene I'm thinking of is the very, very last page of the book, where an elderly Clare is waiting for Henry to come visit her one last time. Man... I'm getting a big ol' lump in my throat just thinking about it...
