Hemingway

I seem to have a memory of Sam's low opinion of the writing of Ernest Hemingway. I'd never read anything by Hemingway myself, and was sort of dissuaded from doing so in part by what I've heard Sam say in the past about his writing.

But I have, over the past several years, been trying to broaden my literary horizons a bit by delving into "the classics" rather than only reading SF all the time as I've been wont to do. Two weeks ago I was up in the classic literature stacks at our city library looking for a classic author I'd not tried yet. I came across Hemingway, and decided to finally give the man a try.

I picked up _The Old Man and the Sea_ since it's his most famous work, and now that I've finished it, I don't understand why Sam seems to loathe Hemingway so much. While it certainly wasn't the best book I've ever read, I enjoyed it on some level, and I'll probably read some more Hemingway somewhere down the line.

I did a search of the site for "Hemingway" and found several instances where Sam professes his dislike for this author, but couldn't find any explanation of why. I suppose I'm just curious.

Gri"plus I also thought the Message Forum could use an interesting literary discussion. We haven't had one of those in a while"shny
