OK, all of you chemistry folks, here's one for YOU.

I like onions, cooked or raw, but I can't help but wonder about their makeup. What is there in an onion that makes your eyes water? What gives it that unique flavor? What substance floats through the air and can easily be identified as cooking onions? How can something taste so good but smell so bad on somebody else's breath?
