  Actually, I think you hold shift to get the special characters, not the other way around... But I've never seen an AZERTY keyboard first hand.
  (We use French-Canadian or billingual, the later being a PAIN IN THE BOTOOOOOM!) AZERTY has the letter placed in a French way, and it's easier to type in French with those. I've heard.
