  It's where the quotation mark is on the American keyboard--i.e., shift-apostrophe.  Which means the quotation mark is over the 2, just like on the old C64.
  Don't ask me why I know this, having lived in the US all my life. heh.
  It could be worse, though:  it *could* be the keyboard layout used across the Channel in France.  I've seen it shown in my French textbook, and it looks something like this:
  ²&é"'(-è_çà)= AZERTYUIOP^$ QSDFGHJKLMù* WXCVBN,;:! <
  Yes, you guessed it-- you have to hold Shift to get to the numbers on the top row.
