Swordsman II is not so much a sequel to Swordsman as an expansion of one of its subplots. Or so I understand by reading about it; I wouldn't have known just by watching the films. The plot of Swordsman II is just as confusing (and seemingly irrelevant) as that of the first movie. But it has all the weirdness and charm of the first movie as well.
