Maybe I would have liked this classic chop-socky flick more if I were familiar with the story upon which it is based. The movie doesn't seem to be about its plot so much as tone, style, and acrobatics (physical or visual or both). Yet for such a film, it spends a preponderance of time telling and narrating and telling, and for all the storytelling happening, the story doesn't make much sense. Had I not been distracted by a narrative that never seemed to wind up anywhere, I probably would have been won over by the film's considerable charm and lively visual style.
