This is an excellent comedy-western starring James Garner as a Maverick-type "on his way to Australia." He passes through an unruly town and temporarily takes the job of sheriff. Garner is as suave, smooth, and cool as they come, and it's sheer delight to watch him handle rough gunfighters with admirable ease. Jack Elam, Harry Morgan, Walter Brennan, Bruce Dern, and Joan Hackett are all great in supporting roles.
