William Shatner directed and co-wrote this entry in the series, proving in no uncertain terms that he should never be allowed to do so again. I don't know how much of the story Shatner is directly responsible for, but it certainly caters to his ego. I can just imagine him brainstorming for ideas. "First, I will climb El Capitan without ropes. Then, I will fight God and win."
This is a shoddy piece of work and actually gets worse in the last half hour, where the crew makes an approach to their final destination that is even longer and less interesting than the analogous scene at the end of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. The single enjoyable moment in this one is Scotty bumping his head.
