Tensions between the Chinese people and Western influence increases as the story of Wong Fei-Hung in 1895 continues. It's a notch above the original, though I didn't care for the comic sidekick, and the pacing bogs down a bit in the climactic showdowns. It certainly breaks one of the stereotypes of martial arts films: this isn't the story of vengeful heroes and bloodthirsty villains but about essentially gentle people striving to thwart extremists on all sides that threaten peace. Besides the obligatory action scenes and evil villains, there are also some moments of great tenderness.
