Robert Montgomery is the director and star of this Philip Marlowe mystery, based pretty loosely on the Raymond Chandler novel. The gimmick is that the camera takes the perspective of Marlowe except for the prologue, epilogue, and a couple of narrative spots in the middle. It's a technique that works well during suspense scenes but distracts during dialogue scenes. Most of the actors don't seem comfortable addressing the camera directly. And Montgomery is all wrong for Marlowe, who's more laid back and sardonic than Montgomery's bitter portrayal. Still, this is an intriguing curiosity from a time when films were rarely so experimental, and mystery buffs (save Chandler purists, perhaps) will find this a pleasant diversion.
